Have you ever thought about how a local business such as a coffee shop, nail salon, or even dry cleaners could help your fundraising efforts? No, it’s not about them writing a big check, although it would be nice.
Think about how many people go in and out of those different businesses regularly each day. You’re looking at potentially hundreds of people a week depending on the company.
All those people could be helping you raise money for your organization!
First, make a list of the local businesses in your neighborhood. Think about counter space or places within the establishment that might be an excellent location to place a collection box. Remember these are businesses so your receptacle can’t disrupt customer traffic or business. You want to make it as easy as possible on the business and the customer.
The best types of businesses to start with are the ones you and your family frequent the most. Think about places where you already have existing relationships with the employees and owners. Keep in mind that you can also collect small electronics such as tablets, e-readers, and mp3 players (see a full list here).
What other kinds of local businesses would be best to start?
Here are a few ideas:
It would be best if you build awareness about your campaign by drawing attention to your collection box. Make your box eye-catching so when someone stops in they can’t miss it. When you’re a Planet Green EnviroPartner, you have access to all kinds of fun printouts and resources to help decorate your boxes.
Chances are while they’re waiting for service, they are going to look at your box. They might take a brochure or a flyer to remind themselves to bring in recyclable items the next time they stop in. Or perhaps they will look up your fundraiser online using their phone. If they do, that means you have successfully built awareness about your campaign.
You might be apprehensive about asking local businesses to support your cause. We get it – asking for help can be pretty scary. But the worst that could happen is that they say no. Many places will say no, but most of the time, however, you’ll find people are willing to help out for a great cause.
It’s surprising once you realize how many people you know that have tons of items just sitting around their house. Instead of collecting dust, tell your colleagues to drop their recyclable items in a donation box for your fundraiser! Telling your friends, co-workers, and acquaintances about your recycling fundraiser will maximize your impact.
Your organization can engage many businesses in the community. Remember these are just some of the successful ideas we encourage you to try out.
