To anyone involved in recycling, or any initiative to safeguard and improve our environment, there are 3 R’s that guide our actions. These R’s are: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Watching this video from Turnaround Toys, we became acquainted with another R: “refuse.” The lyrics of the song say, “I could choose not to move – but I refuse. I refuse to give one more excuse.”
Sometimes saving the world is as simple as that – refusing to do nothing.
This is the story or people who refuse to do nothing – People who refuse to sit around and wait for someone else to do what’s right.
People like Lynn and Nestor Fitzgerald.
This is the story of Turnaround Toys.
“We should not underestimate the impact that a toy can have in a child’s life.” – Lynn Fitzgerald. Turnaround Toys
Located in Union County, North Carolina, Turnaround Toys has been bringing toys year-round to the kids of North and South Carolina since 2008. Each year, this organization holds a series of events aimed at distributing gently used, refurbished toys to children in need.
And it’s not just about toys: Turnaround Toys also provides books, new shoes and new bedding to families.
Founder and Executive Director Lynn Fitzgerald says we should not underestimate the impact that a toy can have in a child’s life. Quite aside from the social, emotional and developmental benefits, sometimes a toy or a teddy bear brings the only comfort some children can find.
Poverty is in every city and every state these kids need our help today! Each child receives a toy, book and stuffed animal at every event to help alleviate the financial burden of having to buy toys and learning books so parents can buy more groceries.
According to the Enquirer Journal, Turnaround Toys aims to help 100,000 local children per year. Lynn has big plans for the program, intending to take it state-to-state, and partnering with other Non-Profits such as Agape House in Freeport, Bahamas. Initiating an additional program called RACE (Reaching Abandoned Children Everywhere) children from orphanages worldwide will receive gently used toys monthly.
Turnaround Toys is funded by the local community efforts. We are proud to welcome Turnaround Toys as a new EnviroPartner with the PlanetGreenRecycle.com e-waste recycling fundraising program. By encouraging the members of their community to recycle, Turnaround Toys will raise lots of money to continue its worthy mission.
Think of the poetry of it – recycled ink cartridges, cellphones and gadgets helping to redistribute recycled toys for the children of the Carolinas and beyond.
