We’re feeling a little nostalgic for the 90s today at Planet Green. It turns out everybody’s got a little box of cassette tapes in thier closet they can’t play anymore, so we went on the search for some fun upcycle crafts you can do to give your old tapes a new life.
Here’s a great tutorial by Chezlin for making a cute wallet out of your old cassette tapes. We suggest either using your favorite album or a mix tape. The tutorial shows how to make the zippered version, but you should be able to get the materials for making the clasp version from a craft store. Better yet, upcycle Great Aunt Tilly’s old coin purse for the hardware.
Instructables has a neat tutorial for making a business card holder, because it turns out cassette tapes are exactly the right size for a business card case. Remember when we used to store data for computer on cassette tapes? No? Well, it’s true, but look closely at this Apple tape: it only holds about 4K of data! That’s the equivalent of less than a second of your average mp3!
Don’t forget about the cassette tape holder, either. This one is super-easy if you’re a minimalist. Just use the cassette tape for another project and fold open the case to make a handy phone stand, business card holder, and more! Dress it up with washi tape, as shown here, or use paint or Sharpie markers to add a little color.
If you’ve got a LOT of clear or translucent tapes, you can make this amazing floor lamp. Light it up with a big string of christmas lights or hang it from the ceiling with a pendant lamp.for an incredibly funky statement.
What other upcycle crafts can you think of to use your old tapes on? Let us know in comments!
